Files 4.2 released with tree view sidebar, enhancements when using multiple panes and more

Files 4.2 has been released as the latest version of this open-source file explorer for Windows users. The update introduces a new tree view in the sidebar, simplifying navigation through deep folder structures without leaving the current location. Alongside this, the breadcrumb bar has also received refinements for smoother navigation. Building on file interaction improvements, a new “Open with” flyout in the toolbar provides quick access to compatible applications for opening selected files. The toolbar customization window now features a search box, letting users filter available items while adjusting their toolbars. For multitasking, users can open a second pane by dragging a tab: drop left or right for a vertical split, or top or bottom for a horizontal division. In addition, a dedicated “Open in other pane” action now opens the current folder in the adjacent pane, and the context menu for creating new panes now lets users pick their layout arrangement.
