The near-term goal of #AI use in #IT should not be the insertion into the IDE some code snippets copied off old StackOverflow posts. A worthy goal, instead, is to be able to produce original specifications, designs, implementations, verifications, and documentations through plain English interactions with application developers, end users, and system sponsors. And a long-term goal should be to replace the traditional “special application” mindset with a new “general system” approach in which the AI is sophisticated enough to analyse the problem at hand, select and instantiate solutions using existing technologies (FPGA, MCU, services, algorithms, code, etc.) and, if necessary, synthesise on-the-fly new technologies, both software and hardware. After all, that is what experienced human technologists have done for as long as the IT discipline has been in existence. If GenAI is already as capable as its proponents claim, these folks ought to upgrade their ambitions a tad.
