"More compute" has ended up being mostly about chasing faster and denser hardware with more complex architectures, packing more buildings with that hardware, and making sure that every last human being on Earth is forced to deal with the stuff in one way or another. They say it's getting smarter and smarter all the time; I haven't seen that. What I've seen is a whole lot of bigger and more, not smarter. #Technology puff pieces are still coming out, still hyping up "generative AI" as basically inevitable because a whole lot of numbers—numbers quantifying money and calculation and transactions made and customers roped in—and these numbers are all going up, all the time. So is the supposed intelligence of the #LLM devices themselves, which is gauged by benchmarks that are little discussed except by those deeply invested, both emotionally and in a business sense, in the success of #AI.
